Respect of Elders

This Wednesday we talked about the value of having elders and older love ones with us. With a generation that views "old people" as a burden, the youth must realize how valuable it it to have elders. Especially Godly elders that have a wealth of knowledge to offer. In 1 Peter 5:5 is says "Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders..." We are to love and respect them, and also not honk our horns at them :)

TRUTH

Praise God for His word and the real TRUTH located inside of it.

As youth, do not be confused by all these supposed truths, know that we were once sinners (Romans 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.) and Jesus bleed and died for those sins (Ephesians 1:7 In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace.) We are His chosen (1 Peter 2:9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:) Now there is a higher calling (Acts 2:38-39 ...Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. 39For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.) Let us fight this good fight in His name!!!

The Proposal

Hi all, this next post was written by Mike from the group Tenth Avenue North. Please read it all, and take a deep look into what He is proposing to us, and what He did for us. It is a love relationship full of passion and deep commitment that our Jesus wants from us. Enjoy.

Beloved

The disciples must have thought Jesus was crazy.
Seriously. I can only imagine their faces.
So confused, so perplexed, uncomfortably glancing back and forth between each other,
wondering if they had misheard, wondering if someone could help them understand.
Meanwhile, you got Jesus, unnerved, unfazed, just sitting there cooly,
looking them dead in the eyes, asking them to marry Him.
Yes, you heard me right…marry Him.
With nothing more than a cup of wine, no less,
the Lamb of God was proposing. So you can imagine their confusion right?
“Wait. What? Come again? Jesus, you feeling alright brotha?
I mean, I don’t think that I’m exactly what you’re looking for!
You want to think about what you’re saying for a minute?”

Of course, we don’t see it that way, because we’re not Jewish.
But they were, and they did. See it that way, I mean.
“Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant,
which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.”
We hear these words and we think Communion, Eucharist, Last Supper.
The disciples heard this and they’re thinking wedding bells.

Apparently,

“In those days,” when a Hebrew man decided to take for Himself a Hebrew woman,
he’d go to his father and say, “Her, Dad. I want to make little rabbis with her.”
So then the dad would go to her dad and they’d talk camels, or sheep,
or whatever the payment was going to be, and after they’d settled on a figure,
the groom would call in all his friends and family, set a table in the middle of a room,
set the aforementioned girl down in front of said table,
break out a cup, fill it with wine, and set it in front of her saying,
“This is my covenant with you, take and drink it.”
And if she did, that was her answer. With a simple gulp and swig,
she was saying, “I do,” and that was it. No rings, no fancy songs or dinners,
just a cup and an invitation.
And oh yeah, all their relatives sitting in the room watching.
I mean, talk about pressure. But yeah, that was it.
Her lips to the glass was the same as saying,
“I accept your life, and I give you mine in return.”

Now, If the girl said yes, “in those days,” she would then go immediately back to her home,
where she would be known as, “one who was bought with a price.”
It’s true. That was her name. Kind of long and tedious, and extremely hard to shout out in
a game of soccer, but that was it. And with her new identity, she would go back to her town,
and start preparing for the wedding. And really, she’d just start waiting
for future husband to finish what he had to do and come and get her.
What was he doing? Well, during the engagement, the groom’s primary responsibility was
to build a mansion for him and his bride to be.

Now girls, before you get too excited, let me explain. “Mansion” in Hebrew means, “apartment.”
And what’s even better is that this apartment was actually more like an addition,
because the groom would build it onto his parents pre-existing house.
Yes. You heard me correctly. Their first home would be with the in-laws.
And right now, I can just imagine how many girls are thinking,
“oh please don’t let me marry a Jewish boy.”
It’s true though. He would build his “mansion” onto the family “insula,”
which is what they would call the family dwelling.
You see, the entire family would just keep building on and building on
until you had what was basically a city block, all comprised of one big bustling Jewish family.
(And you thought My Big Fat Greek Wedding was bad) Crazy, but also true.

Well, as you can imagine, this process could take quite a while.
I mean, it’s a house for crying out loud.
Some scholars say it was six months, or even a year before the poor guy was finished.
And get this, the only one who could decide if it was finished was the father.
So he’d be working and working and working, and every day looking to his dad,
saying, “Are we done yet?” And I can just imagine the father messing with him.
Taking his time, looking it over, and then just saying, “Almost.”
Could you imagine? Oh, the agony!
And to top it all off, the groom and the bride weren’t even allowed to talk to each other.
Nothing. Nada. Zip.
They couldn’t see or speak to one another during the entire engagement, except for one outlet.
The best man. He’d be the instant messenger if you will. Taking notes back and forth between
the doting couple. And those moments were probably pretty funny.
“Here’s your note, ‘one who was bought with a price.’ Check yes, no, or maybe.”
Unbelievable.

But you know, how much more beautiful would that day be when the father finally approved?
That day when the groom was finally finished, and he could gather up his homeboys,
or ‘groomsmen’ as we westerners would say, and imperiously march into his fiance’s town?
Oh it was sweet.
And that’s just what he’d do. He’d get his bridal party together and they’d come to her house,
and without any prior announcement or advanced warning, they would blow a shofar,
which was a ram’s horn that served as a trumpet,
and upon hearing it, the pining bride would come bustling out her front door and practically
straight down the aisle, and into her beloved’s arms.
The period of waiting and wanting would be over,
and the two would be united at last to consummate their long-awaited union.
Joy. Happiness. Little Rabbis… You know, all the good stuff.

So then,
Back to the dinner table with the 12. Can you sense where this is going?
Jesus breaks into this marriage proposal,
cup out, wine-filled, offering his covenant with them. They accept.
“I do” to Jesus. Gulp, gulp. “I accept your life, and I give you mine in return.”
So then, what does Jesus do? He explains how they have to spend some time apart.
Naturally. Only this is going to be longer than a year. However, the best man was coming.
His name? The Holy Spirit. So when Jesus leaves,
off to get busy preparing a “mansion” for them, (”in my Father’s house there are many rooms”)
He doesn’t leave them alone, but instead sends His own mediator, the Holy Spirit,
to keep the messages going between Himself and his Beloved.
Meanwhile, the bride is left behind in her town, keeping watch, day and night,
not knowing the day, time or hour that the bridegroom will appear.
Until finally, after a long-awaited return, and we’re talking seriously,
long awaited; centuries and milleniums waited people,
after this much awaited consummation,
the Father alone will announce that the time has come,
and Jesus will be coming back for all His faithful, all who are His bride.
With a posse of angels and loud trumpet call of their own, He will take us home,
to the marriage supper of the Lamb!
And we will share in ever-increasing joy and intimacy with Him forever and ever.
As C.S. Lewis so brilliantly articulated, “Further up and further in!”

And people still want to insist that Christianity is no more than a religion.

I don’t know about you but in light of this information, it puts Jesus in an entirely different light.
He’s no longer an ideal, or a belief system. He’s a person.
And to put it more precisely, He is a groom in love with his bride.
And not just any bride, but a wayward, adulterous bride.
A bride who is half-hearted at best, chasing other lovers and other interests more than Him.
And still, He keeps on loving. He keeps on being faithful,
He keeps his promises.

In the Old Testament,
He tells his prophet Hosea to marry an unfaithful woman,
to show everyone the way He loves his people. (see Hosea 3)
In the New, He tells us that divorce will never be an option for Him. (Phil 1:6)
Over and over and over again, From Isaiah, to Ezekiel, to Ephesians,
He tells us that we are not just his children, but we are his bride.
Faithless though we might be, we are His, and He is ours.

And like I said before, this changes everything.
It changes the way I view prayer.
It changes the way I view marriage.
It even changes the reasons that I obey.
As Donald Miller once said,
“it’s a far different thing to break a rule, than it is to cheat on a lover.”
I only pray that it changes things for you.

Cell Phone vs. The Bible

Ever wonder what would happen if we treated our Bible like we treat
our cell phones?

What if we carried it around in our purses or pockets?

What if we flipped through it several times a day?

What if we turned back to go get it if we forgot it?

What if we used it to receive messages from the text?

What if we treated it like we couldn't live without it?

What if we gave it to Kids as gifts?

What if we used it when we traveled?

What if we used it in case of emergency?

This is something to make you go.....hmm...where is my Bible?

Oh, and one more thing.

Unlike our cell phone, we don't have to worry about our Bible being
disconnected because Jesus already paid the bill.

Makes you stop and think 'where are my priorities? And no dropped calls!

Trust in the Lord and *ASAP (Always Say A Prayer)

Bible Study @ Eliud & Liz's House

Dear youth and parents,
The Lord is good, and is doing GREAT things. In April the church will begin special Bible studies and continue for several months. These studies will be on Wednesday night and I feel that they will be extremely beneficial to the lives of the youth. They will focus on what we believe and how to reach this world that is hurting. Because of the time interference, the regular youth gathering will be moved to a different day of the month. In April the youth cleaning day is on the 11th. After the cleaning the youth are all welcome to come to our home for Bible study and food. This will replace the Wednesday bible studies for April. I will be sending out more announcements and blog posts in regards to other youth outings (which we will still have) as well as Bible studies. Please bring friends and neighbors. Perhaps they will be more open to come on a day like Friday or Saturday and not be too intimidated by the church setting. Our Lord is awesome and I am excited to see what He does. Pray that these home bible studies be full of Him. Also that the friends that come can see His love through us. Any questions email me at eliud_tirado@hotmail.com.
Youth Cleaning begins at 10:00 April 11th. Bible study will be at our house starting around 12:00 - games and food to follow.

Hi everyone. This year the youth at Cornerstone will be reading the entire New Testament in the Bible. Please encourage them to read. Below are two documents of the schedule for reading it throughout the year. They can check off the readings they have done to keep track of where they are. They don't have to keep to the exact schedule, but they should try and not fall behind. Other than the eternal prize of having God's word grafted into their hearts, an awesome prize will be given at the end when the reading is done. ONLY those who read it within the year will receive the prize, sorry no exceptions. It is NOT a race to see who finishes first, but an encouragement to read what makes us love our Lord Jesus Christ so much. There will be some mini quizzes on what they read as well.

Ice Skating Event

Saturday, February 28th, 1pm (eat lunch before you come)

BURTON FIELD (located on corner of Ninth and St. Croix Streets in Hudson): Burton Field is the site for outdoor ice skating, with a hockey rink and an open skating rink. A warming house and attendant are provided during the skating season, and restrooms are also available.

If the weather is too warm, we may going to an indoor arena in St.Paul.
Frankie is the organizing master of the event and he will be contacting you to see if you plan to attend, have skates, hockey sticks, pucks, etc. If anyone has extras let him know.

Fun, fun, fun! Don't forget the snow tubing event at the beginning of the month!

Reminders from FMSC:
-Remind volunteers to wear close-toed shoes for safety.
-Volunteers will be handling food ingredients. Volunteers should stay at home if they are not feeling well or if they have food allergies.
-FMSC relies on volunteer donations to purchase the ingredients for our meals. Each adult volunteer packs approximately $35 worth of food during a session. (You are not required to donated financially, however FMSC does sell item such as t-shirts, candy, bracelets, etc, and have an offering box if you would like to donate to help purchase food ingredients).

*****IMPORTANT*****I need to know before Wednesday if you plan to attend and how many friends you would like to bring along. We need to fill 15 person slots and make sure we have transportation available.

Embracing Accusation

Satan is a liar. He will tell you that you are not worthy. He will tell you that you are lost. He will tell you that you are cursed. He will convince you not to do anything for God, because your just not good enough. He'll say that your voice can not be heard in this world. He'll remind you of your past sins and your weaknesses. He might even go far as to tell you that he killed Jesus, and that he is dead. He will tell you that your nothing, and who are you to take him on.

Praise God for his word. Don't entertain those thoughts Eph. 4:27. He was destroyed and must flee if we resist James 4:7. What we must remember is that Jesus is ALIVE Luke 24:23!!! He saves and he is still working within us ...for the perfecting of the saints Eph. 4:12. When the devil reminds you of your past (that we are cursed and cannot gain salvation) remind him of his future Matt. 25:31!

Last Wednesday we discussed the topic of missions.

What the Bible says about missions/ evangelizing:
1 Timothy 4:12 (NLT) Don't let anyone think less of you because you are young. Be an example to all believers in what you teach, in the way you live, in your love, your faith, and your purity.

Isaiah 6:8 Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me.

Ephesians 4:11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;

Mark 16:15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.

Acts 16:10 And after he had seen the vision, immediately we endeavoured to go into Macedonia, assuredly gathering that the Lord had called us for to preach the gospel unto them.

Has anyone told you your just a kid. That your prayers can't be heard because God is too busy with big people problems, false! God does hear your prayers. Take time out of each day to thank Him and give Him glory. He listens.

God Pie

Today we talked about time. That scary word that everyone needs so much of, yet no one has enough of. As we separate our daily time (a.k.a. pie) let us give God his piece.

How we break our "pie" is important in life. As young people there is a lot of things competing for our time, let us never forget to give God his time.
